First show nerves

24/03/2012

So the brand new series has begun, and what an opening show! We think this is possibly the best opening to a series EVER!? What do you reckon?
The start of the auditions came with a few nerves we'll admit. We had a brand new panel containing four judges rather than three; two of them were new to the show  and of course there was the return of Simon Cowell. He raised the stakes on day one when he said he wanted to find a worldwide superstar this year and wouldn't settle for less, so we were all a little nervous about what we were going to get.
But we needn't have worried, there was a bit of something for everyone in this first show, including the first rumblings of a new BGT  bromance; Simon and new judge David Walliams! They really are very sweet together, just watch their relationship blossom during the series… Somebody said they could be “the new Ant & Dec”. But really, we all know they’re the old Ant & Dec. The MUCH older Ant & Dec…
So after a bit of a Shaky start (ahem, Maximus Anthony and that wobbly roller-skating pair), we were off to a flyer with Sam Kelly and a beautiful rendition of an Adele number. The nice thing about Sam is that his mum thinks he’s the best singer in the world, but he just thinks he’s just rubbish at everything else but music! He could do really well, but there's lots of talent to come...

One of the great things about working on BGT is that you really never know what’s coming next, and none of us were prepared for The Sugar Dandies. Thankfully we have a ballroom dancing expert on the panel now, but we weren’t even sure Alesha knew what was going on when they started! Their act is definitely pretty unique and we can tell you from experience, all that lifting and spinning another fella is harder than it looks…

It all got a bit squashed backstage just before Only Boys Allowed went on. When the first two went on and started singing on their own, we were thinking, surely all these other guys aren’t just their mates who have come along to support them!? But eventually they all flooded on to join them and had the audience in the palms of their 266 hands. There were goosebumps when they got into full flow, it was just amazing. But we did make sure we got to the canteen first that day, that was a hell of a queue!
One of our favourite audition moments was in show one - The Golden Egel - Dennis Egel. A bonkers but brilliant audition. But where do you get a gold shower cap? (although we've heard Simon Cowell has a gold shower cap, except his is made of ACTUAL gold). Dennis was just amazing. So much thought, effort and creativity had gone into his act and then when Ant went and broke it we couldn't believe it! It just came off in his hand! But if that is Dennis Egel’s starting point, we can’t wait to see what he does next.

The first show of this new series ended Jonathan and Charlotte - a really special audition. We've all seen Britain’s Got Talent produce incredible moments like this before and this was, most certainly, another one. None of us expected that voice to come out of young Jonathan, it was a genuine shock to us backstage. Charlotte was fantastic in her own right too and complemented him brilliantly. Their relationship was also very sweet. Charlotte appears to look after Jonathan and it seems he relies on her, so when Simon suggested they split up we were all adamant they shouldn't. But as Jonathan said, they came as a duo and were going to leave as a duo, and we’re so pleased that they did just that.

All in all one heck of a start and the good news is Show two is shaping up to be a cracker too!
We think it’s looking like this could be a vintage BGT year. What do you think? We'd love to hear from you…
