It’s interesting that you would pick colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel (which makes them perfect compliments of each other). That is, they go well together because each color contains all the hues that the other is missing and therefore completes the color wheel.
Also, blue represents the “cool” side of the wheel and is associated with tranquility/calm, depth, stability, loyalty, wisdom, etc. while orange represents the “warm” side and is associated with enthusiasm, vibrancy, happiness, energy, etc. Blue can also have a tendency to be somewhat solemn and melancholy while orange has a tendency to demand attention. (Marketers and designers know these secrets well.)
So yeah, I totally agree with blue and orange. Neither lime green nor mauve make much sense as far as color theory goes.
